Breast Reduction in Seattle

Although we live in a culture that celebrates a woman's curves, women with very large breasts understand what it's like to have too much of a good thing. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery statistics, there were close to 400,000 breast enlargements and about 150,000 breast reductions in the USA. Many women don't know that they can get relief of their symptoms and get better shaped and more appropriate sized breasts in proportion to the rest of their body. Large breasts can limit your physical activity, cause pain and discomfort, and attract unwanted attention. Women considering breast reduction in Seattle are often self-conscious, and feel the need to hide their bodies beneath baggy, shapeless clothes or even avoid social situations due to a poor body image.

Fortunately, women with overdeveloped breasts can dramatically alter their proportions through surgical breast reduction. Seattle / Bellevue area plastic surgeon Dr. George Marosan specializes in this procedure, which can provide substantial relief from both the physical and emotional burdens of oversized breasts. Breast reduction patients are our happiest patients. A constant comment that we hear in our practice is: "I wish I would've done this years ago".

Breast Reduction in Seattle - Your Options

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, has one of the highest rates of patient satisfaction of all plastic surgery procedures. For a woman whose large breasts have bothered her for years, breast reduction can be life changing. Women considering breast reduction are often seeking relief from:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Poor posture
  • Headaches
  • Limited ability to exercise
  • A feeling of being disproportionate and "top heavy"
  • Painful indentations from bra straps
  • Extensive sagging/stretched skin
  • Skin irritation beneath the breast crease
  • Enlarged areolas
  • Unwelcome attention and social discomfort

Due to the number of health concerns caused by overly large breasts, many health insurance companies will cover all or part of the costs of this breast surgery in Seattle.

Generally, breast reduction involves removal of excess breast tissue, skin, and fat through incisions made on the breasts. In many ways the procedure is similar to a breast lift except in the amount of breast tissue (as well as skin) that is removed. It is an outpatient procedure requiring intravenous anesthesia, which can administered by a board-certified MD anesthesiologist or certified nurse anesthetist (CRNA). Your breast reduction will be tailored to your specific needs, considering factors such as amount of reduction desired, health and medical history, your particular breast composition, and Dr. Marosan's recommendations. Usually, Dr. Marosan will use one of the following methods:

Anchor-Shaped Incision

This incision encircles the areola, descends vertically, then underscores the natural curve of the breast to form the shape of an anchor. After the incision is made, the nipple - which remains attached to the breast, nerves and blood vessels - is moved to a higher position on the breast. If necessary, the areola is also made smaller by removing skin at the perimeter. Then the underlying breast tissue, fat, and skin is removed, and the breast is lifted and tightened to form a more proportionate breast contour.

Vertical Breast Reduction

Also called the lollipop incision, the vertical breast reduction is an option for most women, particularly if they require a lesser degree of reduction. When less tissue and skin need to be removed, it may be possible to limit the incision to one that encircles the areola and descends in a straight line, forming a lollipop shape. Dr. Marosan's preferred technique for the past 10 years is the short scar or lollipop incision.

Almost in all cases, liposuction is used in conjunction with one of the above methods to remove excess fat from the lateral chest wall, anterior bra roll. It is rare, however, that liposuction alone is used for breast reduction especially in a younger woman who has mostly breast tissue and a limited amount of fat in her breasts.

Important Considerations

Although breast reduction is a functional surgery, it is an aesthetic procedure as well. In other words, the surgeon is not simply removing the excess volume of breast tissue, but sculpting and contouring the breasts to create an aesthetically pleasing size and shape. For these reasons, it is extremely important to choose a surgeon with extensive experience and training in breast reduction surgery.
